You WILL! need
green leaves - we used spinach
black pens - one water soluble, one permanent
blue-black ink
containers ( we've got flasks, but you could use jam jars)
pipettes
:p ( don't include this! ) I SAID DON'T!!!!
scissors
mortar and pestel
rubbing alcohol
filter paper - you could use coffee filters, but they need to be white so you can see the colours
clips
pencil
ruler
water
Our aim was to investigate what colours (or pigments) are really in leaves and different kinds of ink (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Cut up the leaves in the mortar, add a small amount of alcohol and prepare to MASH!

Keep going until the alcohol goes bright green.
MEASURE!!!( THE HEIGHT AND WIDTH OF THE CONTAINERS YOU ARE USING )
CUT FILTER PAPER SO THEY ARE NARROWER AND SLIGHTLY TALLER THAN THE CONTAINERS
FOR ONE WE DID 2CM BY 4CM ON FILTER PAPER
DRAW A 1CM LINE UP FROM THE BOTTOM AND PUT A LINE IN THE MIDDLE - THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL LOAD YOUR SAMPLES
USING A PIPETTE, ADD A DOT OF ONE OF THE SAMPLES ( PENS, INK OR GREEN LIQUID FROM THE LEAVES)
PUT A SMALL AMOUNT OF SOLVENT INTO THE CONTAINER (ALCOHOL FOR LEAVES AND PERMANENT PEN, WATER FOR ORDINARY PENS AND INK)
SUSPEND THE FILTER PAPER SO IT JUST DIPS INTO THE SOLVENT
SEE THE SOLVENT ZOOM UP THE FILTER PAPER
AND........
NOW THE RESULTS....TAH DAH
SEE ALL THE DIFFERENT COLOURS OR PIGMENTS
BLACK MARKER PENS (NORMAL ON LEFT, PERMANENT ON RIGHT)
NORMAL BLACK INK IS NOT BLACK AT ALL - IT'S LOTS OF DIFFERENT COLOURS MIXED TOGETHER including blue, red and yellow
PERMANENT BLACK INK DOESN'T SEEM TO BE MADE UP OF DIFFERENT COLOURS
LEAVES - THE SAMPLE HAS SEPARATED INTO AT LEAST 4 DIFFERENT BANDS OF COLOURS. THESE ARE THE PLANTS PIGMENTS. THE TWO GREEN ONES ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHLOROPHYLL - THE CHEMICAL WHICH ALLOWS PLANTS TO PHOTOSYNTHESISE. THEY USE THIS TO CAPTURE ENERGY FROM THE SUN TO GROW. THIS IS THE START OF EVERY FOOD CHAIN ON EARTH. GO PLANTS.
